Summary

  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a completely preventable set of birth defects and neurodevelopmental abnormalities.
  • The safest way to ensure your baby is not at risk of developing FAS is to consume no amount of alcohol while pregnant.
  • For a diagnosis of FAS to be made, all three of the following must be present:
  1. Documentation of all three facial abnormalities (smooth philtrum, thin vermillion and samall palpebral fissures)
  2. Documentation of growth deficits
  3. Documentation of Central Nervous System abnormality
  • The effects of FAS may include physical, behavioural, and/or learning disabilities.
  • Diagnosis should be made with a multi-disciplinary team approach.
  • Comorbidity with a number of other disorders can further complicate diagnosis.
  • The 4-Digit Diagnostic Code is one of the more popular diagnostic tools.
